Illinois Coalition For Higher Ed In Prison (IL-CHEP)
Illinois Coalition For Higher Ed In Prison (IL-CHEP) is a community based organization committed to serving incarcerated individuals. Their mission is to increase access to higher education opportunities for currently incarcerated individuals so that they can achieve educational success and prepare for permanent reentry into the community. Their Freedom to Learn campaign advocates for the rights of incarcerated individuals to obtain higher education degrees while in prison. This campaign is committed to centering the voices of educators inside prisons, incarcerated individuals and the loved ones who support them. In order to ensure that incarcerated individuals have access to educational opportunities across Illinois, the Illinois Coalition for Higher Ed in Prison partners with local colleges and universities throughout the state. These partnerships make it possible for students to receive quality educational opportunities and center self-improvement while serving their sentences.
