The First Judicial District, State Appellate Public Defender's (OSAD) Office is located in Chicago, Illinois. Led by one Deputy Defender and including Staff Attorneys and other support staff, the First Judicial District Office represents indigent persons on appeal in Cook County. The primary function of the Appellate Public Defender's Office is to serve indigent appellants in criminal cases when appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court, the Appellate Court or the Circuit Court. The Office of State Appellate Public Defender is a state agency created by the State Appellate Defender Act. Their central office is located in Springfield, IL. A nine member board governs the Office of State Appellate Public Defender. The board advises the State Appellate Defender and may, subject to rules of the Supreme Court, recommend policies for the operation of the office of the State Appellate Defender.
