The Iowa Office of the State Public Defender (OSPD) holds a branch office in Cedar Rapids, IA, responsible for coordinating Iowa's Indigent Defense System. Their mission is to ensure that all indigent persons in Iowa are provided high-quality legal representation in criminal, juvenile, and other eligible proceedings in the most efficient and fiscally responsible manner. The Office of the State Public Defender is authorized by Chapter 13B of the Iowa Code to administer and appoint Public Defenders in Iowa. The appointed State Public Defender shall coordinate the provision of legal representation to all indigents under arrest or charged with a crime who face the possibility of imprisonment under the applicable criminal statute or ordinance. They shall also provide legal representation to all indigents seeking postconviction relief against whom a contempt action is pending, in juvenile proceedings, on appeal in criminal cases, and on appeal in postconviction relief.
