The Kansas State Board of Indigents' Defense Services has a regional office in the Northeast region of Kansas. The Northeast Kansas Conflict Office is located in Topeka, KS. If a conflict of interest will not permit the public defender to represent a defendant, the court appoints the Northeast Kansas Conflict's Office to represent defendants in conflict cases. This office also provides administrative supervision and support to the Public Defender, Contract Counsel, and Appointed Counsel Systems in Shawnee County. In addition, they respond to requests for defense services and recommend authorization of appropriate expenses for defense attorneys handling the indigent case. The mission of SBIDS is to fulfill the constitutional promise of a zealous defense by providing their clients with team-based advocacy that champions their human dignity and achieves just outcomes on their behalf.
