The King County Department of Public Defense (DPD) has a divisional office—Society of Counsel Representing Accused Persons Division (SCRAPD), located in Kent, WA. With one interim managing attorney, several other attorneys and support staff, this division provides legal representation to adults and juveniles who have been charged with a crime and cannot afford an attorney. DPD also works with partners to address racial disproportionality in the criminal legal system, the collateral consequences of system involvement, and other structural and systemic issues that harm our clients. The DPD has four divisions. Each division handles cases based on the type of charge. Some divisions are only in certain courts or handle a particular case type. Collectively, the DPD divisions handle adult felony cases, misdemeanor cases for Shoreline Municipal Court, Kenmore Municipal Court and Redmond Municipal Court, appeals to misdemeanor cases filed in King County Superior Court, Becca cases (At-Risk Youth, Child in Need of Services (CHINS) and Truancy cases), dependency petitions, involuntary commitment and juvenile cases.
