The Law Office of the Shelby County Public Defender is located in Memphis, TN. With one Chief Public Defender, seven Attorney Supervisors, and other legal supporting staff, the Public Defender's office provides high-quality, zealous, client-centered legal representation to indigent people in Shelby County who cannot pay for private counsel and who are at risk of losing their liberty if convicted. They are committed to cutting-edge practices in representing adults and children each year at every level of the justice system, from municipal court to the United States Supreme Court. The Shelby County office handles misdemeanors and felony cases. Their office consists of three different divisions. The Adult Division consists of five separate teams: General Sessions, Criminal Court, Direct Representation, Major Cases, and Special Litigation. The Juvenile Division defends cases in juvenile court, and the Appellate Division handles cases appealed to the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals. The Shelby County office also has a Re-Entry Unit.
