Literacy for Incarcerated Teens
Description
Literacy for Incarcerated Teens is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating illiteracy among incarcerated youth in New York. LIT actively supports the libraries located in New York City juvenile justice detention centers to ensure that incarcerated youth have access to a diverse collection of books. They also work with the Office of Children and Family Services at the Brookwood residential center to stock and expand their library. LIT is currently working to support libraries in additional facilities operated by the Office of Children and Family Services. Through the program, LIT orders and stocks approved books for young readers aged 8 to 17. They also work to coordinate author visits to youth correctional facilities and foster peer-based group discussions. LIT offers literacy programming to improve literacy among incarcerated youth and facilitate a love for reading.
