Loyola Project for the Innocent

Loyola Project for the Innocent

Description

Loyola’s Project for the Innocent (LPI) is a Loyola School of Law's wrongful conviction clinic, dedicated to serving innocent people in Los Angeles County. LPI works to get those who are languishing in prison for crimes they did not commit out of jail. They communicate directly with incarcerated people about their cases. You can direct your incarcerated loved ones to mail LPI directly. LPI accepts cases for people who are claiming their innocence or that they were wrongfully convicted. The Project assists those who are currently incarcerated in California state prison, had convictions in Central and Southern California, have exhausted all appeals, are indigent, and are not currently represented by counsel. If, after a thorough investigation of a case, a true claim of innocence is provable, clinic students will help draft a habeas petition so that the case can be litigated in court. Law students' responsibilities include investigating claims of innocence, chasing down leads, interviewing witnesses, meeting with prosecutors and visiting prisoners.
