Description

The office of Merced County Public Defender's mission is to provide effective advocacy for the accused. All of their clients are treated in a way that recognizes their fundamental dignity and humanity, attributes that survive all accusations and judgments. Individuals unable to afford private counsel are appointed skilled and dedicated attorneys from their office. Many clients facing the lowest level misdemeanor to the most serious felony receive the benefit of public defender's legal counsel and trial advocacy. Public Defender fees are paid to the Collections Division at the Merced County Superior Court. There is a $50.00 appointment fee that is to be paid when the court appoints Merced County Public Defender's office to your case. Court fees vary per case. The Court ordered fees will be in addition to the attorney fees in your particular case. You may address questions on fees with your attorney. If you are charged with a felony or misdemeanor and are unable to afford an attorney, the Public Defender’s Office may be appointed to represent you.
