Midwest Innocence Project

Midwest Innocence Project

Description

The Midwest Innocence Project (MIP) is a Missouri-based organization that works to free those whom the legal system has failed. Their mission is to educate about, advocate for, and obtain and support the exoneration and release of wrongfully convicted people in the Midwest. The Midwest Innocence Project staff, along with its Board of Directors, Advisory Board, Next Gen Board, and volunteers work diligently to give freedom back to those whom the legal system has failed. Their partnerships with law schools at the University of Missouri in Kansas City and Columbia and the University of Kansas allow presence in the classroom and give them the opportunity to teach the next generation of lawyers and investigators how to identify and prevent these injustices. MIP does not accept cases with claims of self-defense, intoxication, insanity, or consensual sex. In order to submit a case you must complete the following three steps: Meeting the following requirements - the person is claiming actual innocence i.e. he/she did not participate in a crime; was convicted in Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa or Arkansas; is currently incarcerated and has more then ten years left on their sentence; has exhausted their appeal and is not currently represented by an attorney. If eligible, the incarcerated person must directly fill the application form available on their website. Lastly, send the application at the address provided.
