Missouri Prison Books is a nonprofit organization dedicated to getting books into the hands of incarcerated individuals across Missouri. The organization formed in 2019 as a response to the relative lack of literacy organizations serving incarcerated populations in Missouri. Volunteers with Missouri Prison Books understand the unique challenge of getting books to individuals in correctional facilities, as most prisons do not allow for individual community members to send books directly to a single person, and most prison libraries are massively underfunded. To help mitigate these barriers, Missouri Prison Books processes requests for books and gathers donated books, then sends packages directly to prison libraries in an effort to increase the amount of books available to incarcerated individuals at a given facility.
