Monterey County Conviction Review Unit

Monterey County Conviction Review Unit

Description

The Monterey County Conviction Review Unit is committed to ensuring that all individuals receive justice related to their charges. They work toward this goal by thoroughly investigating all official claims of innocence filed with the court to determine the credibility of the claim and any supporting evidence. In order to request a review of case files or evidence, individuals must provide evidence not already considered by the court or show how new technology advancements allow for testing of existing evidence that was not available at the time. Though the Conviction Review Unit operates out of the District Attorney's office, their priority is to ensure that no one convicted by the Monterey County Superior Court is serving time for crimes they did not commit or serving an excessive sentence for criminal charges. Whenever necessary, the unit makes recommendations to the District Attorney regarding further actions based on the evidence provided by petitioning individuals.
