New Jersey Scholarship and Transformative Education in Prisons (NJ-STEP)
Description
The New Jersey Scholarship and Transformative Education in Prisons (NJ-STEP) project provides education to currently incarcerated individuals. This program is a collaborative effort between New Jersey's higher education institutions, the State of New Jersey Department of Corrections and New Jersey State Parole Board. Their vision is to promote continued education after release, and offer the opportunity for incarcerated individuals to work toward a degree, and obtain college credits while serving time. NJ-STEP works with Rutgers University-Newark, partner universities, and the NJ DOC to ensure correct courses and well organized operations will allow students to complete degree requirements. NJ-STEP shifts correctional cultures toward education, changes lives and improves communities to increase public safety. College education in prison benefits the entire system by reducing crime and making communities safer and stronger. NJ-STEP Completion Counselors assist students who still need to complete their AA degree with enrolling in community colleges near their residences when they return to their community. Contact NJ-STEP directly for more information on their services.
