Description
The Orangeburg County Public Defender's Office in South Carolina comes under the First Judicial Circuit. This office has one Circuit Public Defender, one Deputy Public Defender and four Public Defenders on staff, representing defendants in criminal courts of Orangeburg County who are financially indigent. The First Judicial Circuit also includes the Dorchester and Calhoun counties. The Circuit Public Defender is responsible for administering public defender services in each of the counties within the circuit. The South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense (SCCID) oversees the administration of the indigent defense services in Orangeburg County. The SCCID sets and enforces standards to ensure consistency across South Carolina and maintain accountability of those persons entrusted with the life and liberty of poor persons charged with crimes. To qualify for a court-appointed attorney, you must first go through a screening process where you complete a financial affidavit. If you are eligible, an attorney will be appointed to represent you.
