The Portage County Public Defender's Office is located in Ravenna, OH. With one Public Defender Director, nine Attorneys, an Investigator, and other supporting legal staff, this office provides legal representation to indigent adults and juveniles charged with a criminal offense and who risk losing their liberty. The roles and responsibilities of the Portage Public Defender's Office are to provide legal representation, consultation, and advice to clients, represent clients through criminal investigative proceedings, create a defense plan, conduct investigative legal research, and interview the necessary clients and witnesses, work closely with clients, discuss relevant information and strategies. All applicants must be financially screened and found to meet the State Public Defender eligibility guidelines to be eligible for representation by the Portage County Public Defender Office. Individuals determined to be eligible for court-appointed counsel do not have the right to choose who their attorney will be. However, they do have the right to have competent legal representation.
