Tennessee Higher Education Initiative (THEI)

Tennessee Higher Education Initiative, or THEI, is a nonprofit community based organization that brings degree-bearing college programs to prisons in Tennessee. THEI's mission is to disrupt systems of harm, create opportunities for self-sufficiency and success through education, support, and advocacy with and for justice impacted individuals. The organization partners with Nashville State Community College (NSCC) and the Tennessee DOC to offer educational courses to the prison population. The program at the NSCC Turney Center Industrial Complex (TCIX) is designed for students, who work full-time, and take three courses per semester weekly, leading to an Associate's degree. THEI also runs a College Prep program at TCIX. College Prep is a ten-week program that teaches participants habits of mind skills to prepare for the Accuplacer preparation and college experience, such as time management, study skills, and more. THEI also utilizes Zoom technology to offer college instructions in prison. Contact the Tennessee Higher Education Initiative directly to learn more about their educational programs and services.
