The University of Arkansas Little Rock Reentry Initiative Program works to aid incarcerated individuals toward successful reintegration into society once their sentences are completed. This joint effort by volunteers from UA Little Rock and the Arkansas Department of Corrections (ADC) began at the Arkansas Department of Corrections Varner Unit in 2003 as a Varner Unit Jaycees sponsored Community Development Project. The program allows incarcerated individuals to address the circumstances of how and why they entered the prison system and how to avoid those same circumstances once released from prison. As a result, the participants in the program are 15% less likely to return to the prison system. Additionally, the program utilizes peer interaction with mentors who themselves have been involved in the justice system. This highly sought after program requires potential participants to fulfill classwork and complete a nine-page application process before going through a selection committee.
