Vermont Office of Defender General’s Assigned Counsel
The Vermont Office of Defender General's Assigned Counsel is located in Essex Junction. Assigned Counsel Contractors are private attorneys who contract with the Defender General to provide services in criminal and juvenile cases when there are conflicts with the public defenders. The objective is to ensure that there are at least two contractors in most counties to take conflict cases. The office has Public Defenders, attorneys and other supporting staff who provide a fully competent, effective, and ethical defense to each client whose cause has been entrusted to the Office for representation. These legal services are available to indigent defendants charged with crimes with the possibility of jail, to parties in juvenile proceedings in Family Court, in appellate cases before the Vermont Supreme Court, and in post-conviction relief cases.
