Volunteers For Hancock Jail Residents

Volunteers for Hancock Jail Residents is a community organization that supports incarcerated individuals at Hancock Jail. For more than twenty years, volunteers have offered their expertise and mentorship to incarcerated individuals in need. Workshops offered by volunteers include: career coaching and advising, art therapy, creative writing, parenting and co-parenting, coping mechanisms, and yoga, among others. Community volunteers are encouraged to propose concepts for workshops that will benefit incarcerated individuals both during incarceration and when they return to the community. All workshops and programs must first be approved by the jail; once approved, community members can begin to offer their workshops to individuals inside the jail at no cost to participants. Some volunteers prefer to provide social interaction and camaraderie, rather than structured workshops, and offer a compassionate ear to those who want to talk. Others prefer to assist by collecting and distributing books to individuals working to improve literacy skills.
