The Williamsburg County Public Defender's Office is located in Kingstree, SC. This office comes under the Third Judicial Circuit in South Carolina. The Third Judicial Circuit also includes Clarendon, Lee, & Sumter counties. With one Circuit Public Defender and two Assistant Public Defenders, this office represents defendants in criminal court who are financially indigent. Every person has the right to a fair trial. It is the law of our country that competent representation by an attorney is necessary to preserve this fundamental right. State and federal law provide that all persons have the constitutional right to be represented by an attorney if they have been accused of a crime and the punishment for that crime could be a time in jail or prison. To be represented by a Public Defender, you must complete an Application for Counsel. This application will allow you to list the appropriate financial information required to determine if you are considered "indigent" by the Federal Government.
