Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is a private nonprofit organization that provides legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons. EJI provides legal representation to indigent defendants and incarcerated people who have been denied fair and just treatment in the legal system. They litigate on behalf of condemned incarcerated people, juvenile offenders, people wrongly convicted or charged with violent crimes, poor people denied effective representation and others whose trials are marked by racial bias or prosecutorial misconduct. The Equal Justice Initiative is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. EJI also provides re-entry assistance to formerly incarcerated people. Additionally, EJI provides research and recommendations to assist advocates and policymakers in the critically important work of criminal justice reform. publish reports, discussion guides, and other educational materials, and EJI's staff conducts educational tours and presentations for thousands of students, teachers, faith leaders, professional associations, community groups, and international visitors every year.
