A NYC DA Charged An Addict With Felony For Stealing Cold Medicine

A New York City DA charged a known addict, Mr. Randolph, with a felony instead of a misdemeanor for stealing cold medicine. Even though Mr. Randolph has a known history of addiction and mental health struggles, his history of offenses was used against him to raise his charge to a four-year felony instead of offering a misdemeanor and drug rehabilitation. We’ve previously covered the conditions at Riker’s Island, where Mr. Randolph has been held for 800 days prior to sentencing because he was unable to afford an unrealistic bail for someone experiencing homelessness. There have been claims of rodent infestations in both the food and living areas, which New York officials deny. When is someone in New York City going to have the courage to take on this issue so that people like Mr. Randolph can get the care they need and not have to suffer this type of inhumane treatment?
