ACLU Alabama

The ACLU is a private, non-profit membership organization with a mission to preserve and protect the civil liberties and civil rights guaranteed by the U. S. Constitution, especially the principles contained in the Bill of Rights. ACLU advocates for issues such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, government-sponsored religious activities, privacy, discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation or disability, police misconduct, censorship in schools or libraries, fairness in the application of school discipline, workplace privacy, access to government documents, inhumane jail and prison conditions, and other issues of fair treatment by the government. ACLU Alabama exists to pursue the rights and liberties of individuals throughout the state through a combination of lobbying, legislative work, and individual support for those whose constitutional rights are being violated. Staff and volunteers offer their assistance to justice impacted individuals and their families, coordinating direct assistance and advising whenever possible.
