Buffalo County, NE Public Defender’s Office

The Buffalo County Public Defender, located in Kearney, Nebraska, represents all indigent, Defendants charged with felonies and misdemeanors if the penalty for crime carries possible jail time. With one Public Defender and one Chief Deputy Public Defender, the office appoints Public Defenders subject to the approval of the County Board. In Buffalo County, the Court determines if Defendant can financially hire his own attorney or is indigent. If indigent, the Court appoints. The Public Defender's office may not represent as Public Defender before a Court appointment. Furthermore, the office represents all Persons brought before the Mental Health Board as dangerous to themselves or others. Additionally, representing Fugitives from Justice and/or Extradition Defendant if appointed by the Court. The privilege of offering representation to those in need is why the law has offered public defense services.
