District of Columbia Conviction Integrity Unit

The Conviction Integrity Unit is a division of the District of Columbia District Attorney's office that considers claims of innocence. The goal of the Conviction Integrity Unit is to partner with the District of Columbia District Attorney's office primarily as an investigatory arm. They prioritize affirming the reliability of claims of injustice by committing to a complete investigation for all claims wherein incarcerated individuals offer strong information to bolster their claims of innocence, provide trustworthy evidence that they were wrongfully convicted or otherwise prove their claims of injustice during their time inside the justice system. Staff in the office consider the reliability of official claims and determine whether or not plea bargaining played a role the outcome of the case. Those claims of innocence that are confirmed by new evidence may lead to a formal recommendation that the District Attorney reconsider the case and identify whether or not evidence of injustice requires further action.
