Federal Public Defenderss of the Middle District of Georgia, Inc.'s Main Office is located in Macon, Georgia. They are a private, non-profit corporation with a branch office in Columbus, Georgia. Their mission is to represent indigent persons accused of federal criminal offenses. Although the Court appoints us to represent individuals, they are completely independent from the local federal judiciary and are funded by Congress under the Criminal Justice Act. The office also represents persons accused of misdemeanors that occur on federal lands, including Robins Air Force Base, Ft. Benning and the National Parks and Forests in this district. Federal Public Defenders represents someone when the federal district court appoints them to do so. The office is only allowed to work for you in defense of your federal criminal case. They do not prosecute or file charges against anyone, represent individuals in state court, handle civil matters, or file grievances or complaints against other people or government agencies.
