Jackson County, MO Public Defender’s Office

The Jackson County Public Defender's Office is located in Kansas City and is a trial division of the Missouri State Public Defender System (MSPD). The MSPD is responsible for providing legal representation to all indigent citizens accused of or convicted of crimes at the levels of the State Trial Court, Appellate Court, Missouri Supreme Court, and United States Supreme Court. Their mission is to provide high-quality, zealous advocacy for indigent people who are accused of a crime in the State of Missouri. If your situation involves a state crime and you can't hire a lawyer, the Public Defender might be able to represent you. A representative of their office will review your application and possibly request additional information. Based on this information, they will make a determination whether you are eligible for Public Defender representation. If the application is turned down, it is because the case is not a case they can handle, or the applicant is not indigent according to the financial guidelines of the Missouri State Public Defender System. To find out more about eligibility, please contact them directly.
