The Massachusetts Committee For Public Counsel Services in Hampshire County has two divisional offices—a Public Defender Division (PDD) Trial Office and a Commitment Defense Unit, located in Northampton, Massachusetts. With one Attorney-in-Charge, one Supervising Attorney, five Staff Attorneys, and one Social Service Advocate, the office provides high-quality, client-centered legal representation to indigent persons accused of crimes, misdemeanor and felony cases with the help of its PDD Trial Office. In addition, the Commitment Defense, with one Attorney-in-Charge and three Staff Attorneys, provides counsel to needy people facing civil commitments at Baystate Medical Center, Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Providence Hospital, Vibra Hospital of Western Mass, and Holyoke Hospital. Finally, the office provides legal representation to indigent defendants in Northampton, Hampshire, who cannot pay for private counsel and risk losing their liberty if convicted.
