The Somerville Immigration Impact Unit (IIU) is a division of the Massachusetts Committee For Public Counsel Services located in Malden, MA. The Office has two Immigration Law Specialists providing legal representation to indigent defendants who cannot pay for private counsel and risk losing their liberty if convicted in Malden. The IIU helps all Massachusetts court-appointed attorneys to understand and address the collateral immigration issues a client faces. Additionally, the IIU serves indigent clients in criminal, delinquency, youthful offender, child welfare, mental health, sexually dangerous person and sex offender registry cases, and related appeals and post-conviction matters. In criminal matters, the IIU assists appointed counsel in advising noncitizens about the specific immigration consequences of criminal dispositions and mitigating those consequences where possible. For any other issues, the IIU is available for general consultation. A priority of the IIU is to help defense attorneys fulfill their Sixth Amendment duty as defined by this body of law..
