Section Title

Michigan Conviction Integrity Unit

The Michigan Conviction Integrity Unit is a part of the Michigan criminal justice system that considers claims of innocence. The purpose of the division is to act as a dedicated branch of the Michigan legal system that identifies the validity of claims of injustice in Michigan courts by offering diligent consideration to cases wherein individuals offer credible evidence of their innocence, show that they have been wrongfully convicted or provide evidence of other injustice related to criminal proceedings. Staff in the office look into all eligible claims and identify whether or not plea bargaining affected the resolution of the case. They prioritize incarcerated individuals who have served a significant portion of their sentence. Whenever claims are supported by reliable evidence, staff recommend that the Attorney General reconsider the case to identify if claims of innocence warrant further action.
