New Jersey Office of Public Defender’s Special Hearings Unit South District

The New Jersey Public Defender's Special Hearings Unit (SHU) South District is a regional office located in Gibbsboro. SHU office has an attorney on staff who serves Covers Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties. SHU regional offices provide legal representation to clients at Megan's Law Tier Classification Hearings. These hearings, held in each of New Jersey's 21 counties, give clients the chance to challenge a prosecutor's decision about the client's proposed risk (tier) level and the public notification to which the client may be subject. The roles and responsibilities of the Public Defender's Office are to provide legal representation, consultation, and advice to clients, represent clients through criminal investigative proceedings, create a defense plan, conduct legal investigative research, interview the necessary clients and witnesses, work closely with clients, discuss relevant information and strategies. Individuals determined to be eligible for court-appointed counsel do not have the right to choose who their attorney will be. However, they do have the right to competent legal representation. In addition, Public Defenders have an ethical responsibility to work for the best possible resolution of the case for the client.
