Description

New Mexico Peer Education Project is a community-based nonprofit that empowers communities to improve people’s well being worldwide by ensuring that the correct knowledge is available in the right place at the right time. New Mexico Peer Education Project uses the ECHO Model to bring about powerful and lasting interventions in the lives of all people. This program is a solution-based initiative that provides training to incarcerated individuals that allows them to become peer educators. Trained peer educators work to educate the community on important health issues, increase general health literacy, improve job readiness upon release, and reduce risky behaviors. New Mexico Peer Education Project believes that redemption is the answer and that prison time should be used to regain a healthier and more productive life. The institution works toward this goal by developing individual self efficacy, employing an innovative and cost effective peer led strategy, and improving personal community links inside and outside of prison.
