Schenectady County, NY Public Defender Office

The Schenectady County Public Defender's Office is a legal service component of the Schenectady County Government that represents indigent individuals in Criminal Court, Family Court, and County Court proceedings. They also advocate for the protection of the constitutional rights of their clients; contributes to the efficient and effective operation of the criminal justice system in Schenectady County; where appropriate, advocate and work toward achieving results that have the greatest likelihood to help rehabilitate clients; and creates a work environment that supports the empowerment and teamwork of its employees. An individual must apply for a public defender by completing a detailed financial statement and agreeing to provide documentation concerning income, assets and debts for the person and the persons person's spouse, if any. This information is generally provided to a court employee who reviews the financial information and recommends to the judge whether or not the person is eligible for government-paid counsel. Individuals determined to be eligible for court-appointed counsel do not have the right to choose who their attorney will be. However, they do have the right to have competent legal representation.
