UnCommon Law

UnCommon Law (UCL) is a California-based organization that provides pro bono legal representation and advocacy to clients who are changing the narrative about who is incarcerated for violent crime. UCL fights to ensure that all people incarcerated for violent crime have access to healing, justice, and effective legal representation. UnCommon Law's staff provide parole hearing representation for those convicted of violent crime and in legal advocacy, including habeas corpus litigation and class action lawsuits challenging the Board’s practices and procedures. UCL's team has an understanding of the roles, processes, and intricacies of parole policy and law. UCL's legal staff meet clients through numerous legal visits, detailed follow-up letters, tailored homework assignments, feedback on client writings, resource connection, community outreach to create parole preparation packets, and comprehensive document review and case assessment. In the event of a denial, they continue to represent their clients to ensure justice through ongoing advocacy. When UnCommon Law is not able to provide full parole hearing representation, UCL offers written consultations and also challenges decisions by the Board and the Governor in court.
