MDOC Inmate Legal Assistance Program (ILAP)

Inmate Legal Assistance Program is maintained by the Mississippi Department of Corrections to support incarcerated individuals. The purpose of the program is to ensure that individuals who are awaiting trial or appealing convictions have regular access to computers to research their case, as well as access to legal representatives. Attorneys and paralegals meet with currently incarcerated individuals to discuss the details of their case, as well as to assist them with completing legal filings. This program does not involve direct representation, which is available to individuals in the Mississippi corrections system by way of private attorneys are state appointed lawyers. In most cases, Inmate Legal Assistance Program most benefits individuals who are either not ready to bring their appeals to the courtroom, and those who have chosen to represent themselves in court.
