Virginia DOC Medical Assisted Treatment Program

Medical Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a program started by the Virginia Department of Corrections, Community Corrections for released citizens. This program is designed for participants with opioid use disorders. The MAT Phase I program provides cognitive-behavioral treatment, combined with medication-assisted treatment at the point of release that continues after release through ongoing referrals, supportive counseling and probation supervision. To be eligible to participate in the medically assisted treatment component, participants must be returning to the specific home areas of Norfolk, Richmond and Tazewell, volunteer for MAT, be screened as mentally and physically suitable; and successfully participate in on-going substance abuse counseling and other needed programming. The length of the program varies depending on progress and participation.
