Federal Community Defender for the Eastern District of Wisconsin Madison Office

Description

The Federal Community Defender for the Eastern District of Wisconsin Madison Office is a branch federal community defender office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. With one federal public defender, one first assistant federal public defender, and six panel attorneys on staff, the Madison office specializes in the criminal defense of federal offenders who cannot afford to appoint a private attorney. The Madison comunity defender is not a government agency. It is a private corporation -- a law firm -- funded by a grant from the federal judiciary. In this regard and by design, the community defender maintains a degree of independence from the courts it serves, the judges before whom lawyers practice, and the federal prosecutors who are our case-related adversaries. Their resources are extensive: if a case requires an expert, the office has funds to hire the expert; if witnesses need to be located and interviewed or records need to be obtained, they have a full-time defense investigator. Clients are human beings, not defendants with docket numbers; the office is able to give each case and client the time and individual attention each deserves.
