The Federal Public Defender for the District of Puerto Rico's San Juan office is the main federal public defender's office for the District of Puerto Rico. With one federal public defender, one first assistant federal public defender, and 14 panel attorneys on staff, the San Juan office is an independent organization within the Judicial Branch of the federal government, charged with providing legal representation to indigent defendants in the Federal Court. A person’s eligibility for defender services is determined by the federal court. Attorneys of this office may not represent individuals without an appointment from the court, nor may they engage in the private practice of law.
