Description
The Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of Texas's Tyler Office is the main federal public defender's office for the Eastern District of Texas. With one federal public defender, one first assistant federal public defender, and two panel attorneys on staff, the Tyler office works to provide legal representation to those persons accused of a crime against the United States who are financially unable to afford private counsel. Every person accused of a crime is entitled to the effective representation of counsel by the Sixth Amendment of the United States Constitution. Approximately 85 percent of all criminal cases prosecuted in federal courts require appointed legal counsel. The Eastern District of Texas contains 43 counties and covers in excess of 50,000 square miles. There are a total of 11 District Judges and 8 Magistrate Judges. The Federal Public Defender's Office has fully staffed operations in Beaumont, Sherman, Frisco, and Tyler, Texas.
