Description

The Norfolk Public Defender’s Office in Virginia provides legal representation to indigent defendants who cannot pay for private counsel and risk losing their liberty if convicted. They are administered by the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC), a governing body dedicated to protecting and defending the rights and dignity of its clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. The right to counsel guaranteed to every American citizen accused of a crime is embodied in the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution, and made applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. The Norfolk Public Defender's Office is mandated by state law and the Constitutions of the United States and the State of Virginia to provide competent, effective and ethical legal representation to people unable to afford private counsel in certain kinds of cases where life or liberty issues are at stake.
