New Jersey Statewide Conviction Review Unit
Description
The New Jersey Statewide Conviction Review Unit is committed to ensuring that all claims of innocence receive thorough review. The unit operates as a subdivision of the New Jersey Attorney General's office and is tasked with acting in an investigatory capacity. Staff review all claims of innocence filed with the office to determine eligibility and credibility. In order to be eligible for review, the case must involve a currently incarcerated individual serving time for a conviction handed down by New Jersey courts. Additionally, the petition must include evidence that strongly substantiates claims of innocence. This evidence must be novel to the case and directly related to the details of the case. Individuals may also show how technological advancements allow for new testing on existing evidence. It is important to understand that the Conviction Review Unit offers recommendations based on their review of claims of innocence, but they cannot officially rule or take action on any case they investigate.
