Inside Books Project

Section Title

Inside Books Project

Inside Books Project is an Austin-based nonprofit community service volunteer organization that sends free books and educational materials to incarcerated people in Texas. Inside Books is the only books-to-incarcerated people program in Texas, where over 140,000 people are incarcerated. Inside Books Project works to promote reading, literacy, and education among incarcerated individuals and to educate the general public on issues of incarceration. Improved literacy is one of the most important factors in disrupting the generational cycle of incarceration and poverty. By putting books into the hands of incarcerated individuals, Inside Books Project hopes to promote and improve education, as well as assist incarcerated individuals in developing the foundational skills for self-sufficient living. Volunteers use correspondence from incarcerated individuals to locate and provide the materials they request, as well as other books that might match the unique interests and needs of each incarcerated individual. They then package and ship books to corrections facilities, where the materials become the property of incarcerated individuals, rather than additions to the facility library.
