Discovery House

Discovery House, in Spirit Lake, Iowa, is a faith based organization that offers residential and recovery services. The organization provides transitional housing for up to six months for men and women experiencing homelessness and for those who are in recovery from chemical dependence. Potential clients may or may not have completed a treatment program for substance abuse prior to entering Discovery House. The program provides case management to assist residents with setting realistic goals for obtaining sustainable employment and positioning themselves for self-sufficiency after leaving the program. Founder Phyllis Kempema, a recovered alcoholic, wanted to help alcoholics, drug addicts, and homeless individuals bounce back and overcome their addictions. Discovery House is a homeless shelter and sober residential community with a maximum capacity of 14 residents. It is open to adult men and women living in Northwest Iowa, Southern Minnesota, and surrounding states. It is the only facility of its kind in the area.
