23rd Judicial District, LA Public Defender’s Office

The 23rd Judicial District Public Defender's Office is located in Gonzales, LA. With District Defenders, attorneys and other support staff working on a part-time basis, the 23rd Judicial District Office serve clients in Ascension, Assumption and St. James Parish. This office provides legal representation to people charged with a misdemeanor, felony, capital appellate and post-conviction matters. Their mission is to advocate for clients, support practitioners and protects the public by continually improving the services guaranteed by the constitutional right to counsel. In addition, this office aims to prevent wrongful convictions, protect due process and constitutional rights, increase public safety, promote fiscal responsibility, and support economic growth throughout Louisiana. The Lousiana Public Defender Board (LPDB) oversees the work of the 23rd Judicial District Office of the Public Defender. Moreover, the LPDB collaborates with agency partners, particularly within the criminal justice field, but also social service providers, faith-based groups and community advocates, to improve the fairness and efficiency of the criminal justice systems in Louisiana.
