The Aiken County Public Defender's Office in South Carolina comes under the Second Judicial Circuit. This office has one Circuit Public Defender, one Deputy Public Defender and eight Assistant Public Defenders who are court-appointed attorneys. They represent adults charged with crimes in misdemeanor and felony cases in Magistrates and General Sessions Court and juveniles in delinquency cases petitioned in the Family Court. The Second Circuit Public Defender is mandated by state law and the Constitution to provide competent, effective, and ethical legal representation to people unable to afford private counsel in cases where life or liberty issues are at stake. They continue to strive to protect the circuit citizens' rights and guarantee that they receive equal protection under the law.
