Description
The Ashland Public Defender's Office, located in Wisconsin, serves the Ashland, Bayfield and Iron counties. They provide a fully competent, effective, and ethical defense to each client whose cause has been entrusted to the office for representation. The office has two Assistant Special Public Defenders (SPD), attorneys and other supporting staff that provide representation in the appropriate case type. The office's mission is to zealously represent clients, protect constitutional rights, and advocate for an effective and fair criminal justice system. An individual must apply for a public defender by completing a detailed financial statement and agreeing to provide documentation concerning the applicant's financial eligibility, income, assets (including spousal income and assets), family size, and the type of case for which the applicant seeks SPD representation. The right to counsel guaranteed to every American citizen accused of a crime is embodied in the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and made applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment.
