Beaufort County, SC Public Defender’s Office
Description
The Beaufort County Public Defender's Office is part of the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit in South Carolina. With one Circuit Public Defender, 11 Assistant Public Defenders and two Juvenile Assistant Public Defenders, this office represents defendants in criminal court who are financially indigent. They also represent juveniles who have been charged with a crime in juvenile court and cannot afford to hire an attorney. To qualify for an appointed attorney, you must first go through a screening process where you complete a financial affidavit. If you are eligible, an attorney will be appointed to represent you. Several factors are considered, including but not limited to the number of people in your household, whether you own any real estate, or have money in the bank etc. The office weighs all of these factors that screen applications to determine if you are indigent.
