With Public Defenders and other supporting legal staff, this Public Defender's office provides legal representation to individuals that are financially unable to retain an attorney without substantial hardship in the Bedford County Courts. The right to counsel guaranteed to every American citizen accused of a crime is embodied in the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and made applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. An integral component of the right to counsel is the right to court-appointed counsel for those unable to hire an attorney. The goal of the Public Defender is to provide a fully competent, effective, and ethical defense to each client whose cause has been entrusted to the office for representation. Individuals who are determined to be eligible for court-appointed counsel do not have the right to choose who their attorney will be. However, they do have the right to have competent legal representation. If you have any questions about this organization, please use the contact information on the right-hand side of the page.
