Boston Reentry Initiative (BRI)
Description
Boston Reentry Initiative is part of the National Institute of Justice centered on supporting reintegration efforts in the greater Boston area. This interagency public safety program strives to assist adult incarcerated individuals with convictions for violent crime transition back to their communities following their release from correctional facilities through various services. The program is considered promising for its success in assisting individuals during the reentry process. One study found that after 3 years, significantly fewer individuals in the program had been arrested for any crime or violent crime compared to an independent control group. The program was also credited with reductions in the subsequent overall time to arrest for crime. Participants in the program benefit from holistic services that prepare them for reentry, connect them with vital support programs and help mitigate the many barriers that formerly incarcerated people face when they return to the community.
