The Butler County Public Defender's Office is located in Hamilton, Ohio. With one Public Defender, this Public Defender's Office provides effective and ethical legal representation to indigent defendants in Butler County who cannot pay for private counsel and who are at risk of losing their liberty if convicted. The roles and responsibilities of the Public Defender's office are to provide legal representation, consultation, and advice to clients, represent clients through criminal investigative proceedings, create a defense plan, conduct legal investigative research, interview the necessary clients and witnesses, work closely with clients, discuss relevant information and strategies. These services are available for people who meet the qualifications under the income guidelines set forth by the Ohio Public Defender’s office. An individual must apply for a public defender by completing a detailed financial statement and agreeing to provide documentation concerning income, assets and debts for the person and the person’s spouse if any. This information generally is provided to a court employee who reviews the financial information and makes a recommendation to the judge on whether or not the person is eligible for government-paid counsel.
